Shepherd

On days like these,

the dream seems so big

and the resources so few

and the confidence so null and void.

On days like these,

the Holy Spirit reminds me

that the cattle on a thousand hills

are God's--just as I am.

The Lord is my Shepard,

I shall not want...

on days like these.

I pray pass the circumstances

and rest in the pastures of faith.

The Lord is my Shepard,

I shall not want...

on days like these…

on days like these.

Write Time

Working Full-Time and Writing
(or for any busy writer)

A note from Camy:

Well, it’s been fun for the two years I’ve been doing this column, but life (in the form of a debut novel releasing in September) has a habit of getting in the way of things. This will be my last column. Thanks for joining me these past couple years. Write on!

As always, remember that these tips won't all work for everyone, so pick and choose what's right for you.

Learning to get into the writing zone

I talked about left and right brain roles for writing in a previous article.

Left brain is more analytical, right brain is more creative. It's often very difficult to switch between the two completely. Usually when you switch from analytical to creative, you're not 100% into your creative mode--there are vestiges of analytical thinking going on.

That's why it's often difficult to be as creative when writers switch between editing and writing, editing and writing. The analytical side--editing--doesn't fully relinquish brain energy to the creative side for writing.

However, switching quickly--and more importantly, more completely--between sides can be trained, to an extent. This is especially important for busy writers who juggle different duties and tasks.

Set an alarm clock (your watch alarm, phone alarm, PDA alarm) at odd hours during the day. When that alarm goes off, drop everything and write for 8 minutes. Grab whatever's handy--pen and paper, computer, word processor. Immerse yourself in some scene in your current WIP.

It will be really hard, at first. If you have to write nonsense or the same words over and over, then just do it. But eventually you'll shift into right-brain creativity. And the more often you do it, the faster you'll be able to automatically switch.

Keep writing!

A Chat with Gloria Pruett

Pruettgloria I met Gloria Pruett at a conference several years ago. She was a beautiful example of love and faith then and continues to be today. Gloria's non-fiction title, Lift Up Your Hands (Warner Books/Walk Worthy Press) is available in bookstores everywhere as well as online. I had the privilege of reading this book even before its release date of fall, 2005. On the pages of Lift Up Your Hands, Gloria shares with readers her personal testimony, how vital praise is to our ongoing growth as a Christian, the connection between praise and a more meaningful relationship with God, and how praise-time with God can be a refreshing, exciting experience each day.

Gloria is truly one of those people who leaves an inspiring impression (check out her website www.gloriapruett.com). She is currently writing a second book, and I look forward to the blessing that will come from reading it! Below is a portion of my conversation with this precious and powerful woman of God.

Q: Who is Gloria Pruett?

A: Gloria Pruett is a woman who has evolved into someone whose longing is to serve others and help them reach their full potential in Christ, because without Him, we can do nothing, with Him we can do anything!

Q: What was the inspiration behind Lift Up Your Hands?Lift_up_your_hands

A: It was my desire to not only spend time with God but to enjoy it. I didn’t want my personal time to be a debt I owed. I wanted to look forward to spending time with God. Because of my background, praise was something that I felt uncomfortable doing. Therefore, not much effort was put into my “personal praise” at home. It was easy in church. You have the organ and piano, drums and horns. It was a different story at home. So I found myself repeating all the things we did at church.

After a while, I came to grips with myself that I was just going through the motions. I was on “auto pilot, stuck in a rut.” I admitted to the Lord that I was “clock watching” and felt relieved when my praise portion was over. It’s an understatement to say that I wasn’t putting much effort into my praise. One day I asked myself, “If I were God how would I feel about my praise?” My answer was very disappointing. I realized that I was deficient in communicating my love to God. It was then that I asked Holy Spirit to teach me how to praise God in a new and fresh way. I began to go to the dictionary to find words and phrases that expressed how I truly felt. I started with the beginning of the alphabet and went to the end. That was the beginning of what I know now as the ABC’s of praise. It never started out being a book. It started from my desire to love God with all of my heart. I purposed that when I left His presence, He would be pleased with my effort to love Him. I cannot tell you how exhilarating this exercise can be. You, my friend, will have to try it for yourself.

To this day (and I have no doubt it will continue until Jesus comes) I am still coming up with new words that express how much I love and care for the Lord. How thankful I am for all He’s done. I can’t read a book, newspaper or magazine article without pointing to new words to declare “Yeah!  That’s what Jesus is to me! Praise is a lifestyle and you can never run out of accolades to tell God our Father, Jesus our Saviour and Lord, and Holy Spirit how much you love and appreciate Them.

Q: Why is this book relevant to our lives?

A:The Bible says in Psalm 150:6 “Let everything that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD. In Psalm 145:2-3, it declares “Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable."

Praise is not an option. Be appreciative. Keep in mind that when we do something daily, we have to work at it to keep it fresh and alive instead of stale and rote. I believe the concepts in Lift Up Your Hands will help you keep your love life with the Lord fresh and wonderful. It will not only help you elevate your praise, it will help you help others who are “stuck in a rut” of praise.

Write Time

Working Full-Time and Writing
(or for any busy writer)

As always, remember that these tips won't all work for everyone, so pick and choose what's right for you.

How to keep learning when you're crazy-busy, part four:

These days, there are plenty of ways to keep learning your writing craft through classes on the web.

Writing articles

Usually, I don’t have a lot of time to read, but I do have a few minutes here and there. Online writing articles are great for those snatched minutes.

I will often go to large writing website like Writing-World.com and Charlotte Dillon’s resources for romance writers that have tons of links to different articles. I pick a couple and read them during a break at work or while the stew is simmering on the stove.

Other times I’ll bookmark an article I come across and save it to read later. I have a bunch of articles in my browser bookmarks.

Another good place to go for articles is the Writing Tips GoogleGroup. The group is a notice-only group that gives links to writing articles every day. You can either receive the emails or go no-mail and only check the articles when you have time.

Free online writing workshops

If you belong to any organization like American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) or Romance Writers of America (RWA) and any of the RWA chapters, there are usually lots of online writing workshops given by members and available to other members to read.

ACFW has all their online workshops saved in their website archives.

For RWA, if you belong to any of the chapters, they usually have a section of their website devoted to online articles their members may have given. Or they might have a YahooGroup or GoogleGroup that was used for an email workshop, and you can check the email archives or the file sections for the lessons.

Typically, online workshop lessons are short and sweet. Take advantage of their length to read one or two lessons while you have a quick moment here and there.

You can also read short discussions on writing or critiques at Barnes And Noble Book Clubs/Writing clubs and the at Writer’s Digest forums.

Fee-based online workshops

Sometimes, I enjoy committing and paying for an online workshop so that it’ll encourage me to keep up with the lessons. These workshops are typically only for a set number of weeks, so you know that if you can block off time during that time period, you can get back to your regular scheduled life afterwards.

Many RWA chapters host fee-based online workshops, although for some workshops you must be an RWA member, or chapter member, or both. Here are a few chapters who give monthly workshops:

Kiss of Death chapter COFFIN workshops (College of Felony and Intrigue), which offers both murder/suspense related classes and general writing informational classes.

Hearts Through History (click on HHRW Mall, then Campus)

Low Country Romance Writers

RWA Online chapter From the Heart Romance Writers chapter

Orange County Romance Writers chapter

There are several other chapters who give workshops. Check the Online Workshops section of the Romance Writers Report.

There are also pricier options like WritersOnlineWorkshops.com put on by Writer's Digest.

Whichever option you like best, utilize the web to keep learning and perfecting your craft!

What is Your Mountain Experience?

Mount Everest is the gold medal in the Olympic Games of mountaineering.  At 29,028 feet, it is the tallest mountain in the world and represents the highest point of achievement for humans on the face of the earth.  Sitting astride the border between Tibet to the north and Nepal to the south, Everest is a huge mass of black, forbidding rock and ice that dominates the landscape in every direction.

Meet Mr. John Amatt, a member of the first Canadian expedition to reach the summit of Mount Everest.  In the introduction of his book entitled, Straight to the Top and Beyond – Nine Keys for Meeting the Challenge of Changing Times, ©1995, he encourages his readers with the following quote:

The challenge of change is forcing us to rethink our values and to rekindle the spirit of adventure.  It will take courage, resourcefulness and endurance to meet this challenge – the courage to try, to commit and to take risks; the resourcefulness to be innovative and creative in finding new ways of doing old things; and the endurance to keep going when the going gets tough.

It is one of the great paradoxes of human existence that, by nature, we seek out comfort and predictability, using all of our financial resources and intellectual powers to devise technologies that will make our lives easier and less stressful.  The paradox is that once we have created the comfort we desire, we must leave it all behind if we are to move forward toward future opportunity.

His parents, on their honeymoon in 1936, climbed in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland and, two years later, reached the summit of the 12,142-foot Wetterhorn, a mountain that his sister and he climbed when he was eighteen years old.  Also in 1938, his parents were present in Grindlewald when the deadly north face of the Eiger was climbed for the first time, at that point, the most dramatic climb in history.

In chapter ten of his book, Mr. Amatt introduces a faith principle that he calls:  Adventure Attitude.  The nine keys of the Adventure Attitude are:

A

Adaptability

Change is not merely necessary to life.  It is life!  By the same token, life in adaptation.

- Alvin Toffler

D

Desire and Determination

You’ve got to hang on to your dreams.  Great dreams don’t happen overnight.

V

Vision and Values

Vision…is the ability to:

Look to the past and learn from it;

Look to the present and be attuned to it;

Look to the future and be prepared for it.

- Unknown

E

Experience

The only failure in life is when we fail to learn the lessons from our experience.

N

Natural Curiosity

If we’re not pushing our limits, we’re not discovering anything new.

T

Teamwork and Trust

Rarely do we achieve complete success in today’s changing world without the help and support of others.  The essence of teamwork is to identify and use the strengths of others to offset our own limitations, so that the strength of the team becomes greater than the sum of the individual parts.

U

Unlimited Optimism

Life is a leap of faith.  There is no way that we can know what will happen tomorrow.

R

Risk-ability

The only limiting factor to our achievements in life is our fear of the unknown.

E

Exceptional Performance

Achievement is the constant process of going one step beyond your previous experience.

John 10:10 – “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

As the mountain climber gets an occasional exhilaration from climbing, we get the most out of life when we live for Christ.  I see an application to the Christian’s experience.  Jesus did not call us to live the Christian life just to escape hell.  It is not a life of minimum joy and fulfillment, but a life that is full and overflowing.  Our purpose in following Christ should not be merely to avoid eternal punishment.  If that is our primary motivation, we are missing the wonders and joys and victories of climbing higher and higher with Jesus.

Do not live minimally.  Live life to the maximum.  Climb that mountain with confidence!

2 Corinthians 4:18 – “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

Article re: Patrice Gaines, My Mentor --Wanted: Women ready to renew their lives

BoomerGirl.com --Wanted: Women ready to renew their lives (click to read)

On a personal note, I feel like sharing that this article is about my good friend, publishing-world mentor, Patrice Gaines. She is the friend who forwarded my Food for the Spirit email life-stories series, to her then-literary agent, who in-turn contacted me and thus began the life of my first book, I SAY A PRAYER FOR ME: One Woman's Life of Faith and Triumph, with a major publishing house, Walk Worthy Press/Warner Books.

Change is is possible. I am a witness. I was a heroin addict but God stepped in and extacted me from a hopeless existence, gave me purpose, resurrected my dreams, and put people like Patrice in my life to help me make the transition to His thrilling plans for my life. I love her and now that you've read this article too, you understand see why I thank God for allowing our paths to intersect. She's a stunningly beautifully woman with an equally stunningly beautiful spirit!
