It’s been a year since Yolonda Tonette Sanders introduced us to her first novel, Soul Matters. I had the privilege of interviewing Yolonda when Soul Matters was initially released. Recently, Yolonda and I spent time together on the Faith and Fiction Fellowship Tour where we sat down and talked again:
Who is Yolonda Tonette Sanders?
Hmmm. . .an interesting question. There are many different roles I have in life. Besides being a Christian novelist, I'm a wife, mother, daughter, friend, entrepreneur, etc. Overall, I'm a person who just wants to fulfill her purpose in life.
What is Soul Matters about? Why did you write this book?
Soul Matters is a story about faith, family, and love. It centers around a woman whose faith is tested in various ways, causing her to realize the importance of placing God (and only God) first in her life.
My goal in writing the story was to share a message about God in a realistic and entertaining way. The story has a two-fold purpose: 1.) To encourage Christians who may be going through various struggles in life, and 2.) To reach those who don't yet have a relationship with Christ.
Share a couple of writing-related lessons you've learned since becoming a published author.
When I wrote Soul Matters, I was pretty much unknown in the literary world so the only pressure I received was from myself. Now that the book is published, pressure can come from various sources. No matter what, I've learned that it's important to have fun while writing. I try not to focus on the "work" of it all (e.g. stressing over deadlines, concentrating on sales figures, etc.). I think those things take the joy out of writing. Yes, there are times when writing can be frustrating, especially when the progress is hindered by writer's block, publishing delays, or even the cares of life. But, all of these things eventually pass.
What projects are you currently working on?
Right now I'm writing my third novel while waiting to receive a publication date for my second. I've also started a freelance business where I've been writing/reviewing for different print publications and also proofreading and editing for those working on their own writing projects. Anyone interested in finding out more about Soul Matters or my freelance services can do so by visiting my website, www.yolonda.net.
