Upside Down Thinking

As Christmas approaches, I am once again struck by how different God's thinking and understanding is from our own. The thing about the Christmas story that always floors me is how God messed with the expectations of his people who were so grounded in their humanness. The Jewish people were expecting a great and powerful political leader to free them. Their eyes were probably turned toward the palaces and centers of political power.

What does God do? He chooses a poor woman to bring the savior into the world. Who does he tell first? Lowly uneducated, powerless shepherds. The freedom the Jewish nation was looking for was politcal and the power they wanted was external. The freedom He offered, the freedom they needed, was spiritual and internal.

What does this have to do with today, with our time. If you are like me, you have been distressed by what has happened to our government. I am not talking about liberal and conservative, democrat and republican; I am talking about the level of corruption. I am talking about lawmakers who openly say they don't even read bills before they vote on them. The are uunresponsive to polls and protest, but beholden to corporate influence. And the average man and woman has no voice in D.C.

I fear the loss of democracy and decline in the belief of the free market. America as I understand it seems to be eroding. I have prayed that things would be reversed and I have wrung my hands over it.

Then God reminded me of something. One of the fastest growing and most powerful Christian churches in the world is in Communist China. They have spread the good news without tele-evangelists or huge amounts of money or the support of the government. What happens with are government isn't the important thing, what really matters is that we hold fast to our relationship with Christ and the truths of God.

I am not saying we opt out of politics. We need to be informed. We need to vote. But what we don't need to do is wring our hands and think because we are without a strong voice in Washington, we are doomed. A loss of worldly power as Christians might be just what the church needs to grow and come back to a more truthful root.

If China teaches one thing, it is that we can lose all political power and still fulfill the great commission.

This story unfolds as God wants it to unfold. Our task is to remain faithful to him.
