Starting a new story is a lot like giving birth. Painful. Messy. Scary. Full of doubts - "how can I do this?"
I'm picky. I'm angst-filled. But I want to be brilliant while floating leisurely on a fluffy white cloud down a blue sky river.
Why does brilliance require so much, dang it? I mean, hello, the Spirit of God dwells in me. ;) But He's not a fairy God father. Brilliance takes work. Brilliance takes concentration. Brilliance take sweat and tears. It just doesn't come because I want it. Rats.
On Saturday, I worked out a story idea with the lovely and gracious Susan May Warren but on Sunday felt like I had to rethink it. Shh, don't tell Susie. But see, I have to make sure I look at the story from every angle and take it to it's logical end. It's easy to launch a story, find the opening hook and problem, but where does it lead? What's the middle? The end? Can the initial conflict carry through?
If I can't grab a thread, I have to abandon the story idea. So, back to Saturday's idea. It's staying above the fray, proving to provide the best conflict and character journey.
Good is the enemy of the best. The best takes work, takes time, takes thinking and solitude. Whatever you're called to, be diligent. Don't give up on training and teaching your children because it's hard. Don't give up on your marriage because it's stressful at times. Don't give up on your dream because there doesn't seem to be a way.
My prayer is for God to unlock my destiny. Missionary William Carey had a desire to spread the Gospel to India in the late 1700's into the 1800's. He entered Calcutta illegally because the East India Company didn't license him for missionary work. His family suffered sickness and death. But in the end, after fighting against infanticide, widow burning and assisted suicide (sound familiar?) Carey had translated the Word of God into Bengali, Oriya, Marathi, Hindi, Assamese, and Sanskrit, plus 29 other languages and dialects. All in about 41 years.
Carey's saying "Expect great things; attempt great things," inspired missionaries like Hudson Taylor and David Livingstone. And 200 years later, an author name Rachel Hauck.
Be inspired to expect and attempt great things for God! We are only limited by our fears and doubts. Wipe the tablet of your heart clean and ask God to come and write His desires there! He will do it.
