Friday afternoon hubby and I went to see The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.
Has Sandra Bullock ever made a bad movie? Hubby and I were wondering...
This was an excellent film. My action-movie-is-best husband was engrossed as much as I was. We laughed. We teared up. Okay, maybe only I teared up, but still, this was such a well-done, well-told story.
As a writer, I loved this movie. The set up seems improbable. Even hokey. Sandra Bullock's character is Canadian and about to be deported for green card violations. Her big time NY exec career was over. Huh, really, the U.S. gov't is going to deport a Canadian?
But, we believe it because the script rightly explains it! And it fits the story line perfectly. When she ropes in her executive assistant, who hates her, we buy that, too. But we're waiting for him to finally tell her what she can do with her proposal.
The script raises the stakes brilliantly again. It's not only plausible, but exactly what will happen to Ryan Reynolds character if he doesn't go along with the plan.
If you're a writer, or just love good movies, maybe both, you have to see The Proposal. The scenery is amazing, the dialog outstanding. Take notes, writers. Time and time again this film could've stepped into the cliche mire, but deftly avoided every pothole with a clever if not poetic and insightful line.
This movie is layered with meaning and depth, with back story carefully woven in so that it tugs our heartstrings with just the right strength.
Can't wait for the DVD to come out. I'm adding it to my romantic comedy collection.
