Yesterday a friend of mine said to me, "You are living your dream." She was referencing my recent trip to Nashville to plug The Sweet By and By at Sara Evans' fan party.
Of course, it's always fun to meet famous people, but I think she also meant my dream to be a writer.
Since I can remember, I wanted to write though I wasn't sure I would. Journalism and article writing didn't inspire me and I didn't know if I had it in me to write novels. I used to tell people I wanted to write children's books. I though it would be easier. Ha! Little did I know.
In the early '90s I started reading Christian fiction and one year, took a shot at writing one for myself. And the journey began.
But I have to be honest, my dream has always been one thing: to do what God called me to do. Seriously, that's my agenda. "God, what do you want and need from me."
After I graduated from college, I knew I'd never be satisfied in life if I wasn't following and loving Jesus. I wanted to be with Jesus. I knew no matter what life brought my way, if Jesus was at the core of it, I'd be content. I'd be safe. I'd be satisfied.
Out of that "yes and amen" in my heart comes the journey of my life. My corporate career, my husband, the opportunity to write, leading worship. I merely postured my heart before Him and walked through the doors He opened.
For some, we have ideas of who and how we want to be and by golly, we're not going to let go. Some of our ideas and vision is from God and we need to be tenacious. My journey has not always been fun or easy. But others are so stuck on their ideas, they can't see when God is leading them in a different direction.
If you don't feel like you're walking in your destiny, then go to God. Tell Him you want what He has for you and be confident that whatever comes of it, you will love and have grace to do.
Most of us don't lay our hearts out there like that because the first thing that comes to mind is being a missionary in "Zimbabwe" and you have absolutely no desire to travel and serve abroad. But God will some how make you go. After all, He's God and He loves to make His Beloved suffer.
No doubt, suffering is part of the Sermon on the Mount lifestyle, but misery is not! God will give you your hearts desire if you trust Him. Meaning, what you desire will be from Him.
Maybe you're older and some dreams are impractical. Like, you can't play college football, or you're not coordinated enough to be a backflipping cheerleader, but God built and designed you with a purpose in mind! Go to Him and inquire. It's never too late. And guess what, He wants you to walk in your destiny more than you do! Trust Him. He's good, so very good!
